May is National Preservation Month!!

The Windsor Locks Preservation Association, Inc. is hosting these important events during May, 2010 in observance of National Preservation Month, which is held nation wide through the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Connecticut Trust.

A citizens committee including Mickey Danyluk of the Windsor Locks Preservation Association, local historian Bill Fournier, Polly Ann Storms, Lori Lewis, Jerry Dougherty (who has compiled an online directory of historic places for each Connecticut town) and Mrs. Gagnon are completing a 37-site survey of historic Windsor Locks barns, horse stalls, former agricultural buildings as part of "Connecticut Barns"-- A Connecticut Trust For Historic Preservation Project. The project has workers in each Connecticut town and city working to compile pictures and historical profiles of each structure. The local sites will be accessible online once the project is completed state wide.

Update: March 2010

Greetings from the President

Signs of spring are everywhere—longer and brighter days, tulips rising from the soil and even robins have been spotted! We now emerge from a long and bitter winter. Likewise, the historic train station on Main Street has weathered yet another harsh New England winter—being pummeled by damaging ice and corrosive salt. A cursory glance hints that toll of the elements and reminds us that this is the ELEVENTH HOUR and without a doubt THE LAST AND BEST CHANCE TO RESCUE this endangered landmark.

Little has changed since our September 2009 meeting with the Board of Selectmen. Both 1st Selectman Wawruck and Patrick McMahon report that the preliminary study the Town was waiting for, has not yet been received, during these six months, as to the feasibility of modifying the track switches to accommodate the proposed move of a train stop to the area north of the historic train station. Our attorney has appealed with ideas to allow progression of our project with allowances for a new train stop. These offers have been dismissed by the First Selectman with an expressed commitment to wait for the report. I remind everyone that the acquisition and restoration of the historic train station is ultimately and singularly about the survival of this landmark structure and not about other projects, political factions, personal agendas, personal credits or political agendas.

In this season of new life—we cling to the hope that our long awaited dream will manifest.

Additionally, if anyone would like to write letters to Selectman Wawruck on behalf of the historic train station, I would imagine that such action could only help. (Please send us a copy for our records).

As of now—our grants remain intact and our savings gradually accumulate, as our fundraising must continue, as specified in the STEAP Grant. Please, advocate for the historic station—remind friends and neighbors that our negotiations with AMTRAK can only resume with the required letter of from the Windsor Locks Board of Selectmen. Without the letter AMTRAK will not allow us to move forward and all hope for saving our Station will be lost, forever!

Truly yours,
Mickey Danyluk
Acting President and Co-Founder WLPA

Historic Photo Donated:

The photograph below was given as a gift to the Windsor Locks Preservation Association by Barbara Chain of Suffield, and is the oldest known photo of the Historic Train Station.

The photo is believed to be of the CT Governor's Foot Guard (62 men) leading the parade for the dedication of the Soldier's Memorial Hall in Windsor Locks.  The photo is believed to have been taken on June 10, 1891.

The parade began and ended at the train station.  The streets were decorated by professional decorators with bunting.  Dignitaries included - district / local public figures, Civil War veterans, and fraternal / civic organizations.  The grandest day in Windsor Locks history - it was reported "The day was made to order"!

Thank you, Barbara!!
